Proud vs MyFitnessPal: one buddy or a database
Short answer. Proud is a free iPhone app for logging meals with one buddy you chose, with no calories, macros or numbers about food or bodies. You photograph a meal, your buddy sees it, and they send a Proud back. MyFitnessPal is a nutrition tracker built around calories, macros and a large food database. Choose Proud if you want to stop counting. Choose MyFitnessPal if you want the figures.
What is Proud?
Proud is a free iPhone app for logging meals with one person who is on your side. You take a photo of the meal in front of you, add a short note if you have words for it, and one buddy you chose sees it. They can send a Proud back with one tap. That is the whole loop, and Proud keeps it deliberately small.
Proud has no calorie counting anywhere in it: no calories, no macros, no weights, no BMI and no portion sizes. There is no feed, no followers and no algorithm deciding who sees you. Proud counts one thing, the days you showed up, and everything else is a meal and a person.
You pair with your buddy by six character code, invite link or username, and both of you have to agree. Nobody is ever matched with you automatically, and either of you can unpair at any time. Proud is built by one person, Theo Apteker, and launched in December 2025.
Why people choose Proud when they are done counting
People who search for a way to leave a calorie tracker often want the same few things, and Proud is built around them:
- A record without the figure. Proud keeps the photo of the meal and drops the total. Looking back through Proud shows what you ate and when you showed up, not a number to answer to.
- One person, not an audience. Your meals go to exactly one buddy you picked. A Proud from someone who knows you lands differently from a tick on a screen.
- Consistency that is kind. The Proud streak counts days, never amounts. With Proud Plus you can declare up to two rest days a week so the streak waits for you, and mend a missed day within three days.
- Private by design. Every photo is scanned for safety before your buddy sees it, and Proud carries no advertising and does not sell data.
- More than a log. Proud includes Learn lessons grounded in published research and Unfold, a private journal only you can read. Proud Plus adds Bloom, a gentle companion for reflection that is not a therapist.
- Free where it matters. Logging meals, pairing, streaks and sending Prouds cost nothing. Proud Plus is $19.99 a year with a three day free trial, and Proud runs on iPhones with iOS 15.1 or later.

What is the difference between Proud and MyFitnessPal?
Proud is an accountability app: you photograph a meal and one person you chose sees it. MyFitnessPal is a nutrition tracker: you search for what you ate in a large food database and it adds up calories and macros against goals you set. Proud answers the question "did anyone notice I ate?" MyFitnessPal answers a different one: "what was in that, and how does it fit my day?"
That one difference decides almost everything else. Proud is built around a relationship, so it puts its effort into keeping that relationship small, private and kind, and it leaves the figures out entirely. MyFitnessPal is built around figures, so it puts its effort into a deep database, goals and tools for working with them.
How MyFitnessPal works
MyFitnessPal describes itself on its website as a nutrition tracking app, and its App Store listing calls it an AI-powered food and fitness tracker. You log foods from its database, which the website puts at 20.5 million foods, and the app tracks calories and macros against goals you set. It also tracks water and exercise, connects to other fitness apps and devices, and the listing mentions a community where you can find friends.
Its website says nutrition and weight tracking and exercise tracking are included in a free account. Premium adds barcode and meal scanning, voice logging, custom macro goals, ad-free logging, an intermittent fasting tracker and food insights. The App Store listing also describes an AI nutrition coach.
It is also a very large app. On 18 October 2026 its US App Store listing showed an average of 4.7 stars from about 2.4 million ratings, and the current version needs iOS 18 or later.
Price, side by side
Proud is free to use. The core loop of logging a meal, pairing with a buddy, keeping a streak and sending Prouds costs nothing. Proud Plus is optional, $19.99 a year with a three day free trial, and adds rest days, Mend a day, the full Learn library, the Home Screen widget and Bloom.
MyFitnessPal is free to download and has a free account. On its website, Premium is $79.99 a year or $19.99 a month, with a 7 day free trial for people who have not tried Premium before. Its App Store listing shows several other subscription prices, so check what your own phone offers.
Prices in both apps are set through the App Store and can differ by country. Check the listing on your own phone before you subscribe to either.
Privacy, side by side
The App Store privacy label is the one place both apps describe their data the same way. On 18 October 2026, Proud's label listed nothing under "Data Used to Track You." MyFitnessPal's listed identifiers and usage data in that section. Proud's FAQ says it does not sell data and carries no advertising, and its privacy policy names every company that processes data for it, including DeepSeek, which processes Bloom conversations, with Anthropic as a fallback.
Who sees your meals is the other half of privacy. In Proud exactly one person sees your meals, and either of you can unpair at any time. In MyFitnessPal your log is yours, and its community features add other people if you choose to use them.
When Proud is the better choice
Proud is the better choice if the counting is the part you want to stop. Plenty of people try a nutrition tracker and find that turning every meal into a figure is not what they wanted. Proud keeps the useful part, a record of the meal and a reason to show up, and drops the figure.
Proud is also the better fit if you:
- want one person on your side rather than a database, a community or a feed
- want consistency that is shown as days, with room for rest days
- have an iPhone older than iOS 18 can support, since Proud runs on iOS 15.1 or later
- want an app whose App Store label lists no data used to track you
When MyFitnessPal is the better choice
MyFitnessPal is the better choice if you want numbers. Proud produces none on purpose, so if you need calorie or macro figures, for example because a dietitian or doctor has asked you to track them, Proud will not give them to you.
MyFitnessPal is also the better fit if you:
- use an Android phone, since Proud is iPhone only
- want to track more than meals, such as water and exercise, in one place
- want barcode scanning, a large searchable food database or syncing with fitness devices
- prefer an established app with a very large user base
Can you use both?
You can. Proud and MyFitnessPal do different jobs and nothing stops them running on the same phone. It is worth being honest about one thing, though: if the reason you are looking at Proud is to step away from numbers, keeping a calorie app open alongside it keeps the numbers in your day. Whether to pause one is your call. If you work with a dietitian or therapist, it is a good one to make with them.
If counting has started to feel heavy
Some people find that tracking every meal starts to take up more room than they want it to. If that sounds familiar, you do not have to sort it out alone. A dietitian or therapist who works with eating can help, and the resources at the bottom of this page are there any time you need them.

Is Proud a good MyFitnessPal alternative?
