Food journal apps without calories: Proud and 4 more

Short answer. Proud is a free iPhone food journal with no calories, macros or numbers about food or bodies. You photograph a meal and one buddy you chose sees it and sends a Proud back. If you want a different kind of journal, See How You Eat adds reminders and optional sharing, FoodView is a photo diary, MyTummy leans on intuitive eating, and Plate Journal stays on your phone.

What is Proud?

Proud is a free iPhone app for logging meals with one person who is on your side. You take a photo of the meal in front of you, add a short note if you have words for it, and one buddy you chose sees it. They can send a Proud back with one tap. That is the whole loop, and Proud keeps it deliberately small.

Proud has no calorie counting anywhere in it: no calories, no macros, no weights, no BMI and no portion sizes. There is no feed, no followers and no algorithm deciding who sees you. Proud counts one thing, the days you showed up, and everything else is a meal and a person.

You pair with your buddy by six character code, invite link or username, and both of you have to agree. Nobody is ever matched with you automatically, and either of you can unpair at any time. Proud is built by one person, Theo Apteker, and launched in December 2025.

Why people choose Proud as a food journal without calories

A food journal usually works best when it is easy to keep and easy to look back on. Proud is built to be both, and to add one thing most journals leave out:

  • A journal with a reader. A Proud entry is a photo and maybe a note, and one buddy you picked sees it. A Proud back from someone who knows you does a different job from a blank page.
  • Nothing is added up. Proud never turns a meal into a figure, so there is no total to answer to at the end of the day. Looking back through Proud shows what you ate and when you showed up.
  • A streak that counts days. The Proud streak counts days, never amounts. With Proud Plus you can declare up to two rest days a week so the streak waits for you, and mend a missed day within three days.
  • A private place too. Proud includes Unfold, a journal only you can read, not even your buddy. Proud also has Learn lessons grounded in published research, and Proud Plus adds Bloom, a gentle companion for reflection that is not a therapist.
  • Private by design. Every photo is scanned for safety before your buddy sees it, and Proud carries no advertising and does not sell data.
  • Free where it matters. Logging meals, pairing, streaks and sending Prouds cost nothing. Proud Plus is $19.99 a year with a three day free trial, and Proud runs on iPhones with iOS 15.1 or later.

What should a food journal without calories do?

A calorie-free food journal keeps a record of your meals and leaves the arithmetic out. After that the apps differ in who the journal is for: a friend, a coach, a clinician, or only you. The four apps after Proud below each answer that differently, and every claim about them comes from their own App Store listings as of 20 October 2026.

The alternatives, Proud first

1. Proud: a food journal that one buddy reads

Proud is the food journal built around a relationship. You log a meal, one buddy you chose sees it, and they send a Proud back. There are no calories, macros, weights or portion sizes anywhere in the app, and no setting that turns them on.

Proud suits people who find that a journal only works when it feels like someone is paying attention. It keeps the network to exactly two people: no group, no community, no leaderboard and no strangers. Consistency shows up as a streak of days with room for rest days, and for the thoughts that do not belong in front of a buddy, Unfold is a private journal only you can read. Proud Plus adds Bloom, the full Learn library, Mend a day and a Home Screen widget.

Proud is free to use on iPhone with iOS 15.1 or later. It is not on Android.

2. See How You Eat: a photo diary with reminders

Food Diary See How You Eat Log is a photo diary with meal reminders. Its App Store listing says it helps you track meals and eat regularly "without calorie counting", and that logging takes two taps. It says you can share your logs with a coach or friends, and it also works with Apple Watch.

The app is free to download, and its listing shows a range of subscriptions from $4.99 to $36.00, plus a workbook. Its privacy label lists purchases, contact info, identifiers, usage data and other data under data used to track you. It needs iOS 15.0 or later and is available in 13 languages.

Good fit if you want reminders built into your journal, or want to share a log with a coach.

3. FoodView: a photo food diary with nothing to type

FoodView keeps a food diary as a stream of photos. Its listing says there is "no calorie tracking, barcode scanning or manual data entry", and that a photo diary can help when talking with a doctor, dietitian or other health professional. You can sync photos to the cloud and share them through a simple link.

It is free and lists no in-app purchases. Its listing says there are no ads. Its privacy label lists your email address, photos, a user ID and other usage data as linked to you, for app functionality, and no data used to track you. It needs iOS 15.0 or later and is in English only.

Good fit if you want the lightest possible photo log that you can hand to someone when you choose.

4. MyTummy: a journal framed around intuitive eating

MyTummy: Intuitive Eating is a journal built around intuitive eating. Its listing sets that against rigid rules and says to forget calorie counting, and describes labelling your meals as you like and using custom tags to record how different foods make you feel. The listing also mentions a meal plan, which Proud does not have.

It is free to download with in-app purchases listed from $3.99 to $49.99, including a lifetime premium option at $9.99. Its privacy label lists purchases, identifiers, usage data and diagnostics under data used to track you, and lists identifiers used for third-party advertising. It is iPhone only and needs iOS 16.0 or later.

Good fit if you want a solo journal with tags and a focus on how meals feel.

5. Plate Journal: a private journal that stays on your phone

Plate Journal is a newer, simple photo journal. Its listing describes photo-first logging for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks, a rating and a mood for each meal, notes, a filter for your history, and a weekly summary card. It says everything stays on your device, with no accounts and no cloud.

It is free and lists no in-app purchases, and its privacy label says the developer does not collect data. It was first released on 26 May 2026 and is made by an individual developer, so it is early in its life. It needs iOS 17.0 or later and is in English only.

Good fit if you want a journal that only exists on your phone, with a place for how a meal felt.

Price, side by side

Proud is free to use. The core loop of logging a meal, pairing with a buddy, keeping a streak and sending Prouds costs nothing, and Proud Plus is $19.99 a year with a three day free trial.

FoodView and Plate Journal list no in-app purchases. See How You Eat and MyTummy are free to download and sell subscriptions or upgrades inside the app, with several price points each, so what you pay depends on the plan you pick.

Prices are set through the App Store and can differ by country. Check the listing on your own phone before you subscribe to anything.

Privacy, side by side

The App Store privacy label is the one place every app describes its data the same way. On 20 October 2026, Proud, FoodView and Plate Journal listed nothing under "Data Used to Track You". See How You Eat and MyTummy both listed several data types there. Labels are filled in by each developer, and Apple does not verify them.

Who sees your entries is the other half of privacy. In Proud exactly one person sees them, and either of you can unpair at any time. Plate Journal and MyTummy are journals for you alone, See How You Eat can share with a coach or friends, and FoodView shares through a link.

When Proud is the better choice

Proud is the better choice if you want a reader and not only a record. The other journals here are good at helping you look back; Proud is the one where somebody else notices that you ate and is glad about it.

Proud is also the better fit if you:

  • want no calorie or macro figures anywhere, not even behind a setting
  • want consistency shown as days, with room for rest days
  • want one chosen person to see your journal rather than a link or an audience
  • want an app whose privacy label lists no data used to track you

When the other food journals are the better choice

See How You Eat, FoodView, MyTummy and Plate Journal are the better choice in different cases, and it is worth knowing which one fits you.

  • Choose See How You Eat if you want meal reminders, Apple Watch support, or a log you can share with a coach.
  • Choose FoodView if you want a plain photo diary you can show a doctor or dietitian through a link.
  • Choose MyTummy if you want tags for how meals feel and an intuitive eating frame, and you are comfortable with a free app that sells upgrades.
  • Choose Plate Journal if you want a journal that never leaves your phone.
  • Choose any of them over Proud if you use an Android phone or want a journal with no buddy involved, since Proud is iPhone only and is built around one.

If logging has started to feel heavy

Some people find that writing down every meal starts to take up more room than they want it to. If that sounds familiar, you do not have to sort it out alone. A dietitian or therapist who works with eating can help, and the resources at the bottom of this page are there any time you need them.
